This homemade tartar sauce is creamy, tangy, and so easy to make. You’ll never go back to the store-bought kind! Made with simple ingredients like mayonnaise, pickles, lemon juice, and capers, it’s the perfect dipping sauce for fish, seafood, or even fries. In just a few minutes, you can whip up a flavorful condiment that takes any dish to the next level.

Our version keeps the ingredients to a minimum and has a delicious, balanced flavor. Having said that, there are a few variations of tartar sauce, which may or not include mustard, herbs, lemon juice, or even hot sauce. Feel free to play around a bit with the ingredients!

There is very little that can go wrong with the ingredients shown here. However, if you don’t have savory cornichons or gherkins, try to replace them with other savory (not sweet!) pickles. Using sweet pickles will completely change the flavor of the sauce, so we do not recommend using them.
