Lithuanian lazy cake is very popular in Lithuania for very good reasons: it’s super easy to make, doesn’t need to be baked, and it’s incredibly tasty. You’ll surely fall in love with it!
This cake is called “tinginys” in Lithuania, which literally translated means “lazy person” or “sloth”. Why is this cake called like that? Simply put, it’s because it doesn’t need baking. The cake is so easy to make that even a lazy person can make it.

Lithuanian lazy cake doesn’t withstand heat well. If it gets warm, it can become a bit too gooey and start to fall apart. So, it is best to keep it in the fridge and only take it out to slice and eat it. And if you are going for a picnic, you might want to save your tinginys for another occasion. 🙂

Some versions of this recipe suggest adding two to four tablespoons of sugar. While this is entirely fine, the condensed milk should be sweet enough for most people, so we recommend that you skip the sugar on your first try. For the same reason, try to use pure cocoa powder, without added sugar.

Ingredients
- 1 lb. plain cookies (e.g.: digestives, tea cookies, Graham crackers)
- 7 oz butter
- 1 can sweet condensed milk
- 4 tbsp cocoa without sugar
Instructions
- In a large bowl, break the cookies into small pieces.
- In a small pot, melt the butter, add the condensed milk and cocoa, and mix well.
- Pour the mix on the cookies and mix well. All the cookies should be covered.
- Put plastic film or baking paper in a baking form or plastic container, then pour the cookies in and press lightly to get rid of empty spaces. Else, you can pour the cookies on the film or paper and roll them tightly into a large sausage.
- Put the cake in the fridge for a few hours (preferably overnight) so the butter hardens. Done!
Notes
- The recipe is for 10 servings.
- Prep time: 10 minutes.
- Cooking time: no cooking involved.
- Keep the Lithuanian lazy cake in the fridge to keep it from melting, especially if you live in a warm place.
